Sohyang Unveils Heavenly Collaboration: “BLESSING” Digital Single Featuring YDG
Dubbed the “Korean Mariah Carey,” Sohyang has once again come to bless our ears with the track “BLESSING” ft. YDG. The song, released on January 28, 2024, is inspired by the scene in the American movie Amadeus where Mozart creates the Requiem.
Sohyang, a devout Christian, never had plans to pursue singing as a profession. Although, music by artists like Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, and Celine Dion helped her get through difficult times in childhood. She began singing in her local community and was once heard while practicing in a recording studio by composer Jo Hwan-gon.
Sohyang debuted in 1996 with the song “Mr.” and went on a tour with Jo Hwan-gon. She joined her husband Kim Hee-jun's band POS and has released several Christian contemporary tracks. She has held concerts in about 50 countries and is regarded as the most popular and influential Christian contemporary singer in Korea today.
Participating and winning multiple times in many TV shows like King of Mask Singer and I Am a Singer 2, Sohyang has proved her mettle time and again. She has lent her majestic voice to many popular K-drama OSTs, such as Dream High, Hi Bye, Mama!, and 18 Again. In 2014, she became the first non-American artist to sing the American national anthem at an NBA game. Unknown to many, Sohyang is also an author, penning multiple fantasy novels since 2013.
“BLESSING” is Sohyang’s venture into hip-hop. Produced by the team C.P.K (Sohyang, Petra, and Chea Dohyeon from TOUCHED), the song is a message of support for people living with despair.
Referencing the Book of Genesis Chapter 12, the song starts with the quote:
“I will make you into a great nation and I will bless you I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you.”
The music video exudes cinematic brilliance. YDG (Yang Dong Geun)’s acting foreshadows his remarkable appearance in Squid Game Season 2. Performance and Choreography by Krump dance crew PRIME KINGZ adds another needed layer to the song, highlighting the dark and light.
The song begins with Sohyang singing “Bless Me,” which will echo through the entire song and is sure to give listeners goosebumps. Bringing forth emotions like sadness and despair, the song starts on a dark note, with black tones and Sohyang’s haunting vocals. Following this, Petra’s ad-libs and YDG’s rap fit like a glove, creating a climax for the song. The tones in the song change from charcoal to white, symbolizing the emergence of light in the valley of despair, lifting the dark.
If you are looking for a song that will make you cry, feel haunted, and blessed all at the same time at 3 AM, “BLESSING” is your song.
