OMEGA X Shines in 'Jazz for Two' BL Drama OST
The highly anticipated original soundtrack for the acclaimed BL Korean drama Jazz for Two has officially hit the streaming platforms. Various members — Hangyeom Song, Hogeun Jee, Jinkwon Kim, and Jungha Kim — of the K-Pop group OMEGA X have lent their voices to the drama OST.
Based on the #1 ranking BL Webtoon by Clarju on Lezhin Comics with the same name, the drama adaptation premiered in March 2024. Jazz for Two is a school romance drama centered around Yoon Se-heon, a passionate jazz enthusiast who transfers to Wooyeon Arts School to pursue his love for classical music away from family pressures. There, he encounters Han Tae-yi, whose aversion to jazz stems from personal trauma. The drama weaves the journeys of four characters as they confront their struggles against the backdrop of jazz melodies
The original soundtrack album features six distinctive tracks crafted to depict each of the four character's arcs: “Improvisation,” “이대로 (STAY WITH ME),” “홀로 (Alone),” “NEW LIGHT,” “Please Miles,” and “Proust.”
The Jazz for Two album opens with the pop track “Improvisation” sung by Jaehan. It explores the process of two people coming together through music (or jazz in this case) and their hesitant desire towards each other, consistently echoing, “Do you feel the same?,” throughout its chorus.
The second track, “이대로 (STAY WITH ME),” is a rock ballad performed by Jaehan, Hwichan, Hangyeom, and Xen. The song takes viewers through the story of the second couple and is a request “to stay forever” that gives listeners a sense of emotional fondness.
The third track, “홀로(Alone),” is a mellow ballad reflecting on the fear of being alone. Sung by A.C.E member Lee Donghun, the track takes us on a ride filled with confrontation and heartbreaks.
Cozying the album, the fourth track “NEW LIGHT,” vocalized by Hangyeom, evokes cute feelings of love.
Taking inspiration from American jazz trumpeter Miles Davis’ “So What”, the music director for Jazz for Two, Kang Min-kook, created “Please Miles.” The instrumental track was used in the drama scene where the characters Tae-yi, Se-heon, and Do-yoon are assigned a group assignment.
An all-English track, “Proust,” performed by Hogeun Jee, who played the role of Han Tae-yi, concludes the album by mirroring the emotional depth of the drama's conclusion. 'The Proust Effect' is the term used when senses like tastes or scents evoke nostalgia. “Proust” is an arranged version of b101's song with the same title and is featured as part of the story in the drama.
Infusing his personal touch to the album, Hangyeom also partook in composing and writing lyrics for three tracks: “이대로 (STAY WITH ME),” “홀로 (Alone),” and “NEW LIGHT.” Meanwhile, bandmate Jaehan participated in the creation of “Improvisation” and “이대로 (STAY WITH ME).”
Each track on the soundtrack is meticulously crafted to immerse listeners in the multifaceted world of Jazz for Two, showcasing the talent and versatility of the cast and contributing artists. Not only this, but it complements the drama's narrative and stands as a testament to music's profound impact on storytelling.
