HY Celebrates 25 Years of Musical Magic

Japanese rock band HY was formed in their hometown of Higashi-Yakena, Okinawa, in 2000, when they were high school students. All of them are from Okinawa Prefecture, Japan. The band is currently composed of HIDEYUKI SHINZATO (Vocal & Guitar), SHUN NAKA (Drums), SHINSUKE KYODA (Bass), and IZUMI NAKASONE (Keyboard & Vocal). Their distinctive features include vocals performed by male and female members, a rarity in Japanese bands, and the composition based on their regional culture.

After the band had been formed, they started live shows on the streets of  Okinawa. The audience gradually increased and they ran up the stairs to their debut in no time. Despite the rapid rise of their fans, the band chose the path of independent artistry. Following the nationwide release of their first album in 2002, HY got the opportunity to expand their reach with concert tours and promotional activities in other regions.

Their second album, Street Story, released in 2003, sold one million albums and catapulted them to national fame in Japan. They toured across all prefectures and even served as the opening act for Linkin Park. However, their hectic schedule kept them away from their hometown, which took an emotional toll on them

Okinawa is a unique prefecture in Japan, distinguished by its physical distance from other regions and its rich, diverse history. Over time, various cultures were intertwined on the island due to historical interactions with other areas. While many musicians relocate to Tokyo to pursue their careers, HY has chosen to remain rooted in Okinawa. Their deep pride in their hometown and the inspiration they draw from its environment is evident in the band’s music. They chose to stay in Okinawa to compose their original music, and the listeners understand how this decision has been the best for them. Okinawa is a special place for not only the residents but also for people across Japan, a sentiment echoed through HY's music and cultural contributions.

One of their most popular songs “366 Days” was released in 2008. It was featured as the theme song of a TV drama, 366 Days again in 2024 and was covered by various singers. Over fifteen years later, this legendary tune remains a poignant symbol of heartbreak for Japanese listeners, continuing to inspire a new generation of musicians.

HY celebrated their 25th anniversary with the release of their greatest hits album, LOVE STORY ~HY BEST~, on June 12. They also announced the HY 25th Anniversary TOUR to celebrate the memorial year. This nationwide tour will kick off in their hometown Okinawa on September 22, spanning all prefectures of Japan. It’s a unique opportunity to experience their music, performance, and unique personalities while reconnecting with their roots.
