Interview: Dive Deeper into K-Pop Star Hanbyeol’s Artistry With This Exclusive Interview

South Korean singer-songwriter Hanbyeol released a new pop single last month titled “몽환 (Wish).” The song is a resplendent rendition, echoing the vibrance of summer and spring. The lyrics focus on delivering a message of loving oneself and starting afresh. This song is Hanbyeol’s second release of 2024, the first one being “Sweet Dreamz” which was released in January.
Shortly after “몽환 (Wish)” was released, HALSUG chatted with Hanbyeol about her new song, her artistry, and her inspiration to make music. Her answers were as delightful as her voice. Read the interview below to follow our conversation with Hanbyeol.
Q: Hello Hanbyeol! Please introduce yourself to our readers!
Hello, I am singer-songwriter Hanbyeol! Nice to meet you!
Q: Your latest song “몽환 (Wish)” is a song of strength, hope and self-love. It borrows inspiration from the divas who broke barriers and claimed the world for themselves. Who would you say has been that diva in your life?
To me, the diva is probably my role model, Mariah Carey! Mariah Carey is both my muse and my source of inspiration. So this new song was also written with inspiration from Mariah Carey!
Q: What would you say has been important for you in choosing the themes of your songs?
I think references are important. I always like to use ideas already out in the world and recreate them into my ideas even in my daily life, such as watching dramas or watching cool singers perform! Fresh references are important when making songs.
Q: How has your experience been so far in the music industry - as a reality show participant and a soloist? What lessons have you learned?
I realized it is important to show myself free without worrying a little more. I am an artist who makes art and a person who expresses myself through music, so I learned a lesson that I should show myself as I am without hiding anything. Even when I went to auditions and made my music alone, I realized it was more important to be honest than to worry about being perfect.
Q: How do you usually start working on a track? Do you write the lyrics first or do you make the melody?
It seems different every time. Sometimes I write the melody first and sometimes I write the lyrics first, but this time for 'Wish' I wrote the melody first and then the lyrics.

Q: How did you get interested in making music? Do you like to play any musical instrument?
From a very young age, my father exposed me to a lot of music and made me play the piano regularly, so I think I naturally developed an interest in music. Then, when I was in middle school, I saw Mariah Carey and decided that I wanted to start playing music in earnest, so I started doing it properly.
Q: Who would you say is your inspiration in the music industry? Who would you like to collaborate with?
As I said above, I love Mariah Carey very, very much! Mariah Carey and Ariana Grande are my muses, so my dream is to collaborate with them.
Q: When you are not making music, what do you usually do?
I seem to enjoy leisure activities such as watching dramas and movies, meeting friends, talking, dancing, etc.
Q: What can you tell us about your next plan? What do you have in store for the rest of 2024?
First, I am preparing to expand my YouTube even further! We are planning to create more fun content and more things to communicate with fans.
Q: What message do you have for your fans?
Thank you so much for always supporting me and loving my music. I love you. I think I'm holding on right now thanks to you guys. I'll try to show a better side of myself. Please look forward to it in the future!
