THAMA Adopts a New Sound with His Latest Single “Andrea’s Song” featuring Lil Cherry
Amoeba Culture artist THAMA made his official debut in 2017 with his single “Fall In Love,” featuring K-Hip-Hop rapper Owen. Since then, THAMA has become known for being an all-round musician, recognized for his distinctive rich tenor vocals and smooth R&B and Soul style. His work has seen him collaborate with some of the best acts within the K-Hip-Hop and K-R&B scene, such as GIRIBOY, Dynamicduo, Kid Milli, SOLE, GSoul, Verbal Jint, and more. He has also worked with K-Pop group EXO, co-writing the B-Side “Just as usual” from the group’s 2021 special album DON’T FIGHT THE FEELING. In 2021, THAMA released his first full-length album, DON’T DIE COLORS which saw him win the award for ‘Best R&B Album’ at the 19th Korean Music Awards and ‘R&B Album of the Year’ at the 2022 Korean Hip-Hop Awards, confirming THAMA’s talents within the K-R&B industry. Fast forward to 2023, THAMA opened the month of May with his new single and latest collaboration, “Andrea’s Song,” featuring South Korean rapper Lil Cherry.
Based on their previous releases, one would assume that "Andrea's Song" would be the next installment of K-Hip-Hop and K-R&B for both THAMA and Lil Cherry. While the song holds elements from both of these genres, "Andrea's Song" adopts more of a sweet, Country-style melody, with acoustic guitar-led instrumentation opening the song. Later, Hip-Hop beats are introduced as the song enters its first verse, where we hear THAMA take on more of a Rap-based vocal approach compared to his singing style in the chorus. THAMA implements his charming vocals to “Andrea’s Song,” as Lil Cherry follows in the second verse, adding her unique and colorful flavor to the track. There is incredible vocal chemistry between the two artists, as Lil Cherry joins THAMA in the last chorus, taking the last word of each sentence with her harmonious yet quirky vocal runs. Beautiful sounds of a piano join the track during its last twenty seconds or so as a fiddle pierces through the beats of the instrumentation, guiding the song to a peaceful close.
Written and sung in English, "Andrea's Song" expresses the emotions that follow and remain after a break-up, with THAMA and Lil Cherry conveying their plans to move on and get over their ex through their lyrics. “Get yourself stylish like it’s payday // Call all the friends baby, I ain’t playing // No more heartbreakin’, I’m done with it // I’m done being stupid, I’m all alone,” sings THAMA in the catchy chorus that will immediately stick in your head from the first listen.
In a live version of “Andrea’s Song” (uploaded to Amoeba Culture’s YouTube channel) THAMA’s vocals are as impeccable as they are in the recorded release. The video for the live version displays a nostalgic and modern feel, with THAMA recorded through varying camera qualities. The video places the viewer in a position where we are friends with THAMA, making memories and recording him as he sings his song. Other scenes place us in the passenger seat of THAMA’s car. As well as short bursts of us hanging out at a social outing with him. It’s a feel-good video for a feel-good, encouraging break-up song.
The decision to take on an English track demonstrates THAMA’s willingness and determination to take his music beyond expectations—reaching new audiences with new material. In return, hopefully, “Andrea’s Song” will contribute towards him finding opportunities within the international music scene and collaborations with some talented Hip-Hop and R&B artists outside of Korea too.
With so much stored under THAMA’s musical belt already, there is so much hope and excitement for what THAMA has in store for his fans next, and we at HALSUG can’t wait to hear his future releases.
