K-Pop Boy Group TAN Sends Their Song to Space

It is not every day that you hear that a little chunk of K-Pop music has found its place in outer space. K-Pop boy groups like SEVENTEEN and BTS have already made their mark outside of the Earth’s orbit with their music beyond the continuum. The latest group to join the ranks is TAN. TAN made their debut in 2022 and since then have slowly but steadily worked their way into the hearts of global K-Pop music lovers.

TAN, which is an acronym for ‘To All Nations’, consists of seven members — Changsun, Jooan, Jaejun, Sunghyuk, Hyunyeop, Taehoon, and Jiseong. Their fandom is cutely named SODA. The members had participated in survival shows before coming together to form the current group. Since their debut, TAN has released two single albums and three EPs showcasing a varied palette of their singing, dancing, and rapping capabilities. On December 23, 2023, the group also released a Japanese pre-debut EP, Proxima.

TAN landed an opportunity to add a feather to their cap in late 2023 when one of their songs was selected to be sent into space. They joined hands with Celestis, a company that offers space burials, and sent their song “Walking on the moon” into space. The voyage was scheduled to take off just around Christmas 2023, but it was pushed a few days later to January 8, 2024.

The song was sent aboard the Celestis Enterprise Flight from Cape Canaveral in Florida, United States. This is the furthest ever that a K-Pop song has ever traveled in deep space. The launch was commemorated with a string of events and broadcasts leading up to the day of the launch. To date, Celestis has completed 18 voyages to space and continues to pursue more.

To commemorate the release of their song into space, TAN also released a special dance video. They were dressed in sleek black suits and dancing in front of a moon backdrop. The suave dance moves looked even more elegant in a minimalist setting.

After their comeback in October 2023, there was no peep about new music from TAN. But the wait soon ended on February 9, 2024, when TAN’s social media featured new teaser videos, a stunning logo design, and a caption reading “Here comes a new TAN. The wait is over. It begins in 2024 03.” After almost six months, we are now close to new music from TAN.
