Interview: YS BLOCK Brings in a New & Fun Atmosphere with His Latest Album ‘YONGSAN’

A rising star of the K-Hip-Hop scene, YS Block has made a name for himself with a sound heavily influenced by Southern American music; the enjoyable and energetic tunes create party-based music with the aim of appealing to people of all ages and backgrounds. YS Block, a musician from Yongsan, South Korea, is well-known in the hip-hop community, particularly in the alternative hip-hop spaces. The “YS” in his name pays homage to Yongsan, the district where he lives, and his involvement in local events like Yongsan Citizen's Day — organized by the Yongsan District Office — further solidifying his deep connection to his roots.

YS Block first gained widespread attention by securing the top spot among contestants in the Modern Arts Society's P2P competition. Building on that momentum, he released his debut EP YS BLOCK Ver. 1 in 2021, featuring six tracks that showcased his unique sound. Around the same time, he also performed as the opening act for the PAVE DA WAVE concert, an event backed by the Seoul Foundation for Arts and Culture’s Seoul Live project, establishing his presence in the music scene.

In 2023, YS Block released his first full-length album Dirty South Korean, an eight-track project that earned him shout-outs from respected hip-hop artists both locally and internationally. His win at the Baund Open Mic contest also secured him a performance on the opening stage of RAP HOUSE, an event curated by renowned rapper The Quiett to spotlight emerging talent in the hip-hop scene.

Similarly, this year has been eventful for YS Block as he released his latest album YONGSAN. HALSUG had the wonderful opportunity to catch up with YS Block on his recent album.

Q: Congrats on your second album YONGSAN. What makes this album more unique compared to your previous work?

It's my color and voice that stand out and addictive chorus.

Q: What is the song on your discography that has the greatest meaning to you and why?

The most meaningful song is “Hip.” The reason is that it's the sound I wanted the most, and it was the most fun when I made it, and it conveys my experiences well.

Q: When creating a song or an album, what is the most influential thing in your day-to-day life from which you pull inspiration?

The most influential are new experiences because artists have to experience new challenges and new things every time, rather than always being satisfied in one place.

Q: The "YS" in your name is said to stand for Yongsan, the district where you live. What was the process like in choosing this name and making it a part of your identity?

YS stands for Yongsan, Korea, and I wanted to be honest with my fans about where I grew up because my origin is important.

Q: Your musical style is heavily influenced by Southern American music. What began your music making process & do you have any words for those who wish to establish a name for themself in the music industry?

At first, I liked the sound of the American West, but when I heard the exciting and cheerful rhythm of the Southern sound, I thought it would suit me perfectly. It was pleasant and fun. Answering the second part of the question, if you want to make a name for yourself in the industry, the world will know someday if you do music that makes you successful instead of showing others what you want to do and what you want to express without deceiving yourself.

Q: Five songs on your album YONGSAN feature different artists — how did you compose those songs to suit each artist's different and distinctive styles into the respective songs?

The participating artists are artists with whom I have been drinking, playing, and getting close to each other, and each of them has distinct colors, so I thought they would go well with my songs. Because if you have fun playing together, it's even more fun when you're working on a song.

Q: Because of your distinctive viewpoint and commitment to your artistry, you're offering a new insight into the Korean music world. What approach do you take to connect listeners to a different sound?

I think it's more important to approach the public in a friendly way, show myself, make music that's not difficult, and communicate with each other.

Q: Your victory at the Baund Open Mic contest earned you the opportunity to perform at the opening stage of RAP HOUSE. Also, you became an opening act for the PAVE DA WAVE concert back in November 2023. How was it experiencing these two different types of atmospheres?

Performances are always fun and exciting, but I can't be the only one. I'm looking for a way to express my gratitude to the fans who came to work with me even if I sing a song.

Q: Are there any words or messages you'd like to share with your fans?

Thank you always. I will do activities where I can share my bright energy and strength.
