Interview: Hanuel Talks about Latest Single ‘SEE U’, Collaborations, and more.

Hanuel is a Korean-Canadian R&B singer, songwriter, and producer. His ambition for making music is so that his listeners can relate and captivate the emotions portrayed through his songs. Hanuel is an artist that makes music in various genres such as R&B, Lofi, and Hip-Hop. Some artists who influence his musical style are Keshi, Jimmy Brown, Crush, and more.

HALSUG had the pleasure of interviewing Hanuel to get to know more about him and talk about his latest single “SEE U,” ft. Yelloasis.

Q: How did you get into music?

H: I grew up playing instruments in church and naturally started singing. My main instrument was the guitar, so once I thought of making original music, I started to make demos with my guitar.

Q: What artists influence your musical style?

H: Keshi, Jimmy Brown, Crush, Jay Park, Daniel Caeser, and Joji.

Q: What does your creative process look like?

H: I usually get random ideas from movies, scenery, etc. Then I'll start playing with the guitar, find chords that fit how I'm feeling, and begin with top-line melodies. After I get a top-line down, I'll start writing lyrics around a specific topic.

Q: Out of all the songs you've released, which one do you recommend for first-time listeners and why?

H: If you are listening to my music for the first time, I suggest checking out my new song, "SEE U."  It is my best work to date and displays my true artistry. "SEE U" is an excellent example of the music I've always wanted to make, and I will continue to make similar songs in the future. It also best describes who I am as an artist.

Q: Your latest single "SEE U" ft. Yelloasis is gaining a lot of attention. Can you tell me more about the song? What was it like working with Yelloasis, and how did the collaboration come about?

H: ‘SEE U’ is a song that focuses on reminiscing about someone/something. It's not your typical song about a breakup, but instead more about the anger and the resentment that is inside the person dealing with it.

Working with Yelloasis was a dream come true. As someone who has listened to Yelloasis in high school, working on a track with him was such an excellent opportunity for me. The collaboration came about when I sent the song over to him. He liked the record, so he wrote his verse and sent it over.

Q: Who do you hope to collaborate with next?

H: Many artists come to mind, but if I were to choose, it would have to be Keshi, Jay Park, or BIBI.

Keshi is my primary influence, so a chance to work with him would be insane. Jay Park is basically the father of K-HIPHOP/K-RNB, so naturally, I've always looked up to him and would like to work with him. Lastly, BIBI has a unique sound and I feel like working with someone like her could boost my creativity in ways I would never imagine.

Q: What hopes do you have for you and your music?

H: I hope my listeners can catch the emotions I put into my songs and that my audience can relate to my music. I also hope that I'll be able to perform my music live soon and one day embark on a tour. Sooner or later, I wish to be on a big stage.
