Five Underrated Songs From The Rose To Add To Your Playlist
Korean indie-rock band, The Rose is no stranger to the international music scene. After having debuted in 2017 with the fan-favorite “SORRY,” the members KIM WOOSUNG (lead vocalist, guitarist), PARK DOJOON (main vocalist, keyboardist, guitarist), LEE HAJOON (drummer), and LEE JAEHYEONG (bassist), have penned and composed almost 30 songs under their discography. As we dawn closer and closer to The Rose's upcoming album DUAL and their DAWN TO DUSK World Tour, we thought we would recount five of their most underrated singles and B-sides that best encapsulate the band's musical prowess and growth over the past six years.
1. “Candy (So Good)”
Album: Void - EP
Release date: April 16, 2018
A groovy track from the band's debut EP Void released under their former label J&Star Company, "Candy (So Good)," is the perfect introduction to the band's sonic versatility and a fitting addition to your summer playlist. Featuring an up-tempo yet refreshing melody, the song lyrically strays away from the album's counterparts like "I.L.Y." and "BABY" as the members dive into themes of love and lust.
2. “Take Me Down”
Album: DAWN - EP
Release date: October 04, 2018
Quite a trip down memory lane, "Take Me Down" is a slow rock track from the band's second EP DAWN, released in 2018, along with the band's popular song "She's In The Rain." The lyrics refer to the pain that comes with trying to move on from something, whether it be a relationship or an event. The song, paired with soft guitar riffs and piano, collectively showcases the member’s soothing vocals full of emotion.
"Can you take me down? // I'm under cold rain again."
3. “Black Rose”
Album: Black Rose - Single
Release date: August 23, 2020
Marked as the band's first release under their self-established company WINDFALL, the ballad is a dedication to their fanbase "Black Rose" for their support throughout all the hardships. "I'm drowning below the shallow water // But you take my hand and you pull me aside // I thank you always that you've saved me from tears," sings WOOSUNG in the first verse. If the comfort of a hug could be felt through a song, it would be "Black Rose." Besides dropping in the midst of the pandemic, the song also came about after some turbulent times the band went through following the contract termination process with their former label, J&Star Company.
4. “Cure”
Album: HEAL
Release date: October 7, 2022
Being the third track off of the band's first full-length album, HEAL, released under both Transparent Arts and WINDFALL, “Cure" offers listeners a hopeful outlook on life through its lyrics. Just like the band's ups and downs over the years, the song serves as a subtle reminder about finding the perfect cure for one's ailments through self-reflection and the support of a community. Combined with their melodious vocals and anthemic drums, the song will surely evoke a sense of healing and calmness for its listeners.
"Imagine if we made peace by peace // A lot of ups and harmonies // Every day we're broken piece by piece // Need to remedy our minds, recover us."
5. “Alive”
Album: Back To Me / Alive - Singles
Release date: July 21, 2023
Having established themselves as an all-encompassing group making waves across borders, “Alive” provides listeners with a fresher but darker sound to their discography. The song serves as the perfect soundtrack for a late-night drive. Apart from their usual anthemic drums, the band surprises its listeners in the bridge with a seamless fusion of dubstep and pop-rock.
The quartet is set to embark on their fourth world tour in October, kicking off in North America, with more dates to be announced soon. With their ever-growing popularity around the world and impeccable discography, The Rose is bound to be a group that will continue reaching greater heights in years to come with their heartfelt lyrics and melodies.
